School to Club links – Going INTO school!

To fit in with the Mini Squash Development Programme, England Squash would suggest that a club tries to work with four Primary Schools and one Secondary School if possible.

Heres a quick guide to making the first contact with a school.

Redbridge hold the first Mini Squash schools festival in England

The Country’s first Unsquashable Mini Squash Festival took place on Thursday the 27th November at Redbridge Sports Centre, Essex.

Redbridge ran a 3-hour festival involving six local primary schools.  Prior to the festival all schools were given two taster sessions in the school, either as part of their curriculum PE or as extra PE at either lunch time or after school.

A team from each school then attended the festival to battle it out for the ‘Redbridge Unsquashable Mini Squash Festival’ title.  The festival comprised different activity stations including Longest Rally, Speed Gun Challenge and Target Squash.  With a near 50-50 split of girls and boys this festival was a huge success for the centre and also for Squash

A total of 80 children attended, enjoyed themselves immensely and all had their first taster of squash.  As a follow up to this the club are offering all the children that attended the festival an eight-week course at a reduced cost and the winning team all received free court time vouchers to use at the club.

Matt Crane (Redbridge Core Sports Development Officer) said ‘Its brilliant to see so many kids having a go, if just a quarter of these come on our courses then it will give the club a great boost. We are now going to explore all the possibilities of keeping our school sessions going and holding festivals on a more regular basis’

Dave Lazarus (Redbridge Head Coach) said ‘Doing the schools work has been really enjoyable and given me renewed enthusiasm to work with beginners’
